Nairobi attractions and places to stay

Nairobi is the largest city in East Africa. It began as a shanty town depot of the East African Railroad in 1899. In a little over 90 years it has become one of the major cities of modern Africa and a headquarters of the United Nations. It is a vibrant and growing city-a mosaic of many races and cultures.

Most of the many tourists to Kenya only spend about one or two nights in Nairobi. There are several places to visit and places to eat in Nairobi. The main attractions of a Nairobi vacation safari are listed below. From a variety of sight seeing options, the below are recommended;

The Nairobi National game park

(11,300hectares). the Nairobi park is not far from the city center, but gives you a real bush experience. You'll see the most game except elephant. This is possibly your best chance of seeing rhino. Stay in your vehicle. This is by far the most favoured Nairobi attraction spot.

AFEW giraffe center-Nairobi Landmarks

In Langata. See giraffe eye to eye and feed them by hand-long, sticky, blue tongues and giant eyelashes. Fun for children and adults. Tea room, gift shop and nature trails. Operated by Africa Fund for Endangered Wildlife.

Karen Blixen Museum

Nairobi Kenya's colonial Landmark with pleasant house and gardens. Worth a visit if you read the book by the same author. The nearby Karen Blixen coffee Garden, gallery and gift shop echo themes of the museum.

Ostrich Farm

In Langata area Nairobi. Feed the ostriches and stand on their eggs. Display and sale of various crafts-see craftsmen at work. This is one of the many fun Nairobi tour activity (ies).

Bomas of Kenya

Tribal dancing in an amphitheater and displays of traditional Kenyan homesteads (boma). Many tour groups and heavy-duty souvenir selling. The Bomas is the top cultural Nairobi safari place.

Kenya Nairobi National Museum

There is much to see, famous for Leakey prehistoric discoveries and tribal artifacts.

Tourist time in Nairobi is also spent shopping-searching out Kenyan mementos and gifts to take home. There are soapstone carvings, wonderful ethnic jewelry, many wooden carvings, colorful cloth kanga and kikoi. Most hotels have souvenir shops. African Heritage shops (downtown and on the airport road) have a broad selection and good displays.

If you are more adventurous, try the block of small blue duka across the road from the Nairobi city market building. Leave behind your valuables, but take your humor, patience and bargaining skills and have fun. Downtown Nairobi is full of souvenir shops. Farther out in the suburbs are Utamaduni (up market craft centre) and Kazuri beads (original ceramics) in Karen, and the craft Market and undugu (co-op store) in the Westlands area.

Tend to have a more defined character and extensive grounds. Most are 15 or more minutes from downtown and farther from the Nairobi airport.
